Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs about the Building Belonging Campaign Goals and Giving

Q: What is the goal of the capital improvements campaign?
The projects support our values of sustainability, accessibility, hospitality, and safety and will help foster a sense of belonging. The largest projects include a flat roof replacement and solar panels, a new controller unit for the elevator, and the replacement of some of the air-conditioning and heating units. While increasing our footprint with a gym has been previously discussed, it will not be included. The priorities have been carefully vetted by staff and approved by the Council. We also plan to support a community outreach partner.

Q: When will the building repairs and improvements begin?
Repairs and improvements will occur as gift income is received. We are actively assessing the priority order for these projects with the help of a contractor.

Q: When will the capital campaign begin and end?
The campaign launches on Sunday, October 27th, and concludes on November 17th with Commitment Sunday. Leadership gifts will be invited prior to the campaign launch. Pledge payments and gifts will be received over the next three years.

Q: Is this a good time for our congregation to launch a capital campaign?
Yes! The original plan was to launch a campaign in 2020, but it was put on hold with the uncertainties around COVID. Pastor Glenn will continue to lead Nativity for several more years, training in an additional pastor through a process approved by the Council.

Q: Why do we need a consultant to run a capital campaign?
Launching and running a capital campaign takes a great deal of work and we do not have the staff or the expertise within the congregation. Hiring a consultant ensures that we engage the entire congregation in the campaign, producing the best results.

Q: Which ministry partner will we support?
A small task force will be looking at programs related to at-risk children, youth, and families to recommend some possible partners. The congregation will be asked which of these are of greatest interest, and the Council will make a final decision.

Q: What is the status of Nativity’s operating budget? Are we in a good financial position?
Nativity’s current budget has revenues (donations and income) exceeding expenses at the end of each month in 2024. We also were able to meet our expenses in 2023. Nativity’s external debt is very low, with only $28K remaining on one of our adjacent rental properties. Our positive trends coming out of the pandemic combined with a vibrant and growing community (5% so far this year) mean that Nativity is in a strong, healthy financial position.

Q: Will we have to take on any debt in order to complete these projects?
No, we do not think we will have to take on any debt to complete these projects.

Q: Is a $2 million fundraising goal realistic for Nativity?
Research conducted by our consultant indicates that Nativity’s active families have the giving history and capacity to give a minimum of $2 million over and above their current support. Achieving the goal is also dependent on the participation of a minimum of 300 households. Every gift counts.

Q: How do I make a gift or commitment to the Belonging campaign?
During the last week in October, you will receive a mailing with information about the campaign and an invitation to participate. Your commitment can be made either online or by returning your commitment card by November 17.

Q: Will we be invited to make our annual stewardship commitments during the
campaign?
Yes. Your invitation to support the capital campaign will also include an invitation to renew your current support for the ongoing ministry of Nativity. Members are asked to give first priority to their unrestricted support for ministry and consider their gift to the campaign as being over and above their regular giving.

Q: May I make a gift through my will or other estate plans as a part of this campaign?
As a part of this campaign, Nativity will invite and celebrate your planned future gifts for the church. Certain types of planned gifts may include assets that can be converted to cash, used to fund our capital projects, and counted toward our $2 million goal. Other planned gifts will be counted as over-and-above our goal. Joanne Griffin (Joanne@NativityChurch.org) can assist you with your gift plan.

Q: What if my financial situation changes and I can’t fulfill my estimate of giving?
Your estimate of giving indicates your intent, which allows Nativity’s leaders to plan and prioritize the projects. However, we understand that unforeseen circumstances may require you to change your estimated giving amount mid-giving period.
