What is your favorite lion story? Simba in the Lion King, Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia, the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz? What are some things that are cool about lions? Who can ROAR the loudest in your family?
Daniel’s story is a lot like the story of Joseph and the colored coat. He was an Israelite taken to a different country to be a slave. God helped him understand dreams, and he worked really hard and did well at his job. He became so successful that others were jealous of him. The only way they could get Daniel in trouble was to flatter and trick the King into making a law that said people could only pray to King Darius for 30 days, not any other God or human. Daniel really liked King Darius, but he didn’t think it was right to worship him. Who did Daniel worship? Which commandment was he following?

Digging deeper:
Daniel had a very strong faith habit of praying. “He went to his room three times a day to pray. He got down on his knees and gave thanks to his God.” (Daniel 6:10.) That is very specific, but there are many other ways to pray. Moses fell facedown to pray (Deuteronomy 9:18). Paul told believers to lift up their hands when they prayed (1Timothy 2:8) You can pray anywhere at any time. When do you like to talk to God? Do you pray together as a family or mostly when you are alone? Check out the fun prayer ideas below!
Family Activities
Daniel Doorhanger: You can use the supplies from the August drive thru kit, or your own supplies. Make a rectangle, approximately 8 in. long by 3 in. wide out of foam, cardstock, cardboard, etc. Cut a hole near the top to make it a doorhanger. I decorated with a lightning bolt that said, “Prayer is Powerful”, some curled up paper strips around the hole like a lion’s mane, and a lion sticker to remind me that God listened to Daniel’s prayers and saved him from the lions. You can do something similar or create your own design.
Pray a different way: Prayer does not have to be quiet or boring!
- Launch your cares away! Use a slingshot or just throw water balloons as you say this prayer, inspired by David’s trust in God to defeat the giant. “God, I trust you to be with me when I face my giant problems!” (Splat!)
- Grab a teaspoon (tsp.) from the kitchen and pass it around. Everyone take a turn and say something to God using these three starters: Thanks for ____, Sorry about ____, Please help ____. TSP = Thanks, Sorry, Please.
- Stretch your whole body when you say this prayer: “God, you are above (reach toward the sky), below (touch your toes), inside (hands to heart) and all around (big arm circles). I worship you (reach toward the sky), and give my life to you (touch your toes). And I love you (hands to heart) with all that I am (big arm circles).
