A Prayer Shawl & Baby Blanket Boom with a background of knit shawls and blankets

Nativity’s Prayer Shawl team is a small but mighty group using knitting needles and crochet hooks to share the love of Christ one stitch at a time. The group knits or crochets blankets (some quilted) for baptisms as well as prayer shawls for people dealing with difficult life events.

During the Covid shutdown, the Nativity Prayer Shawl group continued to crochet and knit baby blankets and prayer shawls. They met by Zoom or, in warmer weather, with lawn chairs in the St. Anthony Village Central Park across from Nativity. Being housebound then, the group created a huge supply of blankets and shawls.

On the weekend of May 20-21, 2023, this supply of blankets and shawls was displayed and blessed during worship. Afterwards, the group invited members to take a shawl or blanket to gift a family member or friend. As their bins of baby blankets were still bursting at the seams, the group brainstormed ways to share their warm creations beyond the walls of Nativity. Ideas included sharing with local first responders and hospitals who encounter those in need.

In December, the group delivered eight baby blankets to the New Brighton Community Outreach Police Officer to distribute. Last summer, a local hospital chaplain was delighted to comfort patients with ten shawls and is eager for more. All of these handmade items include special tags with blessings from Nativity Lutheran Church.

The Prayer Shawl Group meets the last Tuesday of every month (except December) from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Nativity Commons near the fireplace. If your New Year’s resolution is to learn to knit or crochet, we can help with that! Please join us this Tuesday, January 28th, at 6:30 pm. Contact Marcy Sorensen, 612-327-9266, for questions about the group’s ministry or meetings.
