Talk About It!

Today we are going to talk about prophets. Prophets were people who got messages from God and they shared those messages with others. You probably already know some. Who did God talk to in the burning bush? Moses! Who did God call to in the night? Samuel! God gave them messages and they shared the news with the Israelites. There were lots of prophets who are not as well known: Amos, Joel, Ezekiel, Micah and more. Their messages from God are written down in the Bible, in the Old Testament. The prophets often warned people that bad choices have bad consequences. Sometimes their messages sounded scary, but they also reminded people that we can change and make better choices and that God is forgiving.
Digging deeper: Amos was a shepherd and a fig tree farmer. He wasn’t a rich or important man in his country, but he was brave enough to tell the leaders that God was angry with them. They were ignoring the poor and allowing slavery, just like Egypt had done to them in the past. Do you ever do that? Repeat the mistakes that you know are bad? I have. Sometimes our big emotions make us impulsive. Thankfully, as we grow, we learn more and more ways to have self-control and make better choices. And no matter if you are big or small, you can always give and receive forgiveness.

Family Activity Choices

Pick activities to do together! Supplies are provided in our Monthly At-Home Kits you picked up at our drive thru events or ask to have delivered to your home.

Activity 1: Ring toss writings: Cut out the center of some paper plates to make rings. Write some of God’s inspiring words on the rings. (Trust in the Lord, Love your neighbor as yourself, Let justice flow like a river, God is love, etc.) Find some tall, fairly thin, containers. In my kitchen I found a 2 liter bottle, a water bottle, a skinny thermos and a tall bottle of bubbles. Play your own ring toss carnival game!
Activity 2: Speak up!: Write a letter to a community leader or elected official asking them to make good, kind choices that help people in need. Kids have a voice too!

Pray Together

“Dear God, give us the courage to speak up when we see bad things happening. Help us to share your love in a hurting world. Amen.”

Bless Each Other

At the end of your time, give each other a special blessing to remember one of God’s promises.

Give each other a hug and and say “Thank you for sharing God’s good news!”
