Sharing and Discussion

Can you say thank you in sign language? Any other language?

Who likes presents? When someone gives you a gift, what do you say? Besides saying, “thank you”, what are other ways you can show your gratitude? A hug? A thank-you note? A phone call?

Our Bible story today is about ten men who were sick and sad. These men weren’t allowed to live with their families. No one ever gave them hugs or wanted to be near them. But Jesus was different. They asked for help and he made them well! Wasn’t that an amazing gift? Why do you think only one returned to say, “Thank you”?

Read the Bible Together

School Age Kids: Luke 17: 11-19

Digging deeper:

The outcasts were not allowed to live with their families, or go to the market, or go to the temple, or attend any family celebrations. Because of the pandemic, we may be able to understand this story more than we ever could have before. We are sad about the places we can’t go and the people we can’t see in the ways that we used to, but we can still find things to be thankful for! Has anyone helped you lately when you got hurt? What has made you laugh recently? What outdoor activity have you enjoyed? Keep celebrating the good things!

Family Activities

Gratitude Cube: Using the cardstock design from your Aug. drive-thru bag, or printing a copy from the activity pages below, make your cube and take turns rolling it and answering the questions. Alternative: roll a regular die and answer the corresponding questions – #1 I help my family when_____. #2 I feel really good when _____.  #3 I’m grateful for _____. #4 Someone thanked my when I _____. #5 I thank God for _____.  #6 I could help someone I don’t know by _____.

Gratitude games: Transform any game you regularly play into a gratitude exercise! For example, if you’re playing Candyland, every time someone picks a green card, they say something they are thankful for.  Or try saying something nice about every person you catch in a game of Tag. Or say something that you are grateful for before you serve the ping pong ball. Any game your family likes can be adapted!

Gratitude Yoga Exercises for Kids: See sheet in the activity pages below.

Pray Together

Dear God, we thank you for this time to learn and talk together. Help us remember how the one returned to give Jesus thanks. Help us to do the same. Amen.

Bless Each Other

Say thank you to each other for a way they’ve been a blessing to you this week.
